Essential Guide to Creating a Child's Bedroom

Whether you're preparing your first nursery or trying to turn a children's den into a teenage living space, we've got some great ideas and expert advice to help you create the perfect children's room without breaking the bank.

5 Tier Corner Shelf

From a baby's first nursery to a teenager's bedroom, decorating a room for your children can be a tricky look to get right, but there are a few basic rules to follow to get it right.

5 Tier Corner Shelf

Ideas for a nursery

When you plan a room for a newborn, bear in mind that decorating a nursery can be as much about creating a comfortable space for you as for your child.

Decoration

Calm and comfort are all-important for newborns, so choose delicate shades and tactile fabrics for cosiness. Add a pretty mobile above the cot but make sure they are hung high enough to be out of reach when your child is old enough to stand.

Furniture

Rather than furniture specifically designed with babies in mind, choose well-made items that can adapt with your child. For example, a chest of drawers can be topped with a mat to make a changing table, and a two-in-one cot bed will last until your baby is ready for a grown-up bed.

Window treatments

Blackout blinds are a good choice for babies' rooms. They make it much easier to settle small children during the day or on light evenings and should help stop them waking up at dawn in the summer months. Roller blinds also allow you to let in as much natural light as possible at other times.

Temperature

To avoid your baby becoming too hot or cold, don't position their cot right next to a window or by a radiator. It may also be a good idea to invest in a room thermometer and try to keep the room at around 18°C.

Ideas For a toddlers bedroom

As they grow, energetic toddlers will need a place for supervised play, as well as a secure and cozy bed to encourage them to snuggle down alone at night.

Decorating

Children grow out of the latest fads as quickly as their first pair of shoes, so rather than succumbing to an entire room of Dora the Explorer, choose a neutral backdrop and introduce colour with textiles, graphic wall stickers and fun accessories. A feature wall in a bright and lively wallpaper is also an easy way to change a nursery into bedroom.

Furniture

Opt for a wardrobe with a pole that can be raised as they grow older. Secure free-standing furniture by fixing it to the wall with anti-toppling devices such as straps or fixing brackets. Open drawers can be used to climb, so use child-proof drawer latches on lower drawers.

Storage

Store toys in a variety of containers, according to their size. Combine see-through plastic storage crates, trunks and toy boxes with tubs, baskets, over-door organisers and mini-drawers. Categorise things so that they make sense to your child and arrange them so that they're easy to take out and put away.

Lighting

Dimmer switches are a boon for checking on a sleeping toddler and can be left on low for an infant who's afraid of the dark. A glowing lamp or nightlight is also a good idea, but make to keep it out of reach.

Safety

Cover electrical sockets and keep trailing cords out of reach. Childproof the windows with latches that will allow the window to open no more than four inches and keep window areas clear of furniture so that children aren't tempted to climb onto them to reach windows.

Ideas for older children's bedrooms

Older children will relish having some input in the way their bedroom looks and will hanker after their own den for games and sleepovers with friends.

Decorating

Use their favourite colours, textures and motifs in a way that suits your home - If bubblegum pink and electric blue go against all your interior style principles, compromise with powder pink or dove grey. Instead of dousing whole walls in vivid colours, add accents with soft furnishings and framed pictures, which can be easily and cheaply updated.

Furniture

Have a spare bed ready for sleepovers. If space is limited opt for a hideaway bed with a pull-out truckle underneath for when friends come to stay. The White Company has stylish designs.

Storage

Adjustable shelves can accommodate big picture books for small kids, then be adapted for paperbacks as well as CDs and DVDs. Make use of wasted hanging space inside a standard wardrobe by fixing up a two-tier system of rails or fill the space at the bottom of the wardrobe with small plastic baskets for storing underwear, socks, nightwear and smaller items.

Lighting

Fairy lights are an easy way to add a magical touch - string twinkling lights round a mirror for a little girl, or pin up a net of lights to create a personal cosmos for a budding spaceman.

Finishing touches

Murals and wall stickers can create a fun focal point in a kid's room. Help them to personalise their space in a shared bedroom by spelling out their names with funky lettering so that they each have their own dedicated area

Ideas for teenagers bedrooms

A teenager's bedroom is a place to study, socialise and sleep. Use spots of bright colour and clever storage to ceate a multi-functional space that meets all their needs.

Decoration

Find the middle ground when you're choosing a colour scheme so that you end up with a look that you can both live with. Instead of all-black walls to ceiling, why not compromise with a single painted feature wall so that they still get their colour fix?

Storage

The key to getting a teen to put anything away is to make sure that it is easily accesible. Hang bulky items like guitars, skateboard helmets and backpacks on heavy duty wall hooks , add clear containers to bookcases to give at-a-glance storage for folded clothes and fix a brightly coloured peg board to the inside of a wardrobe for accessories, jewellery, belts, scarves, bags, sunglasses, etc.

Furniture

Create a dedicated spot where teens can study in peace. Choose a desk big enough to write comfortably and pack in extra space for books and notes with wall-mounted shelving above the workspace. Invest in an adult-size wardrobe and chest of drawers to accommodate a growing collection of clothes.

Style extra

Make a chill-out corner with beanbags, stacks of cushions and low-level seating to keep your living room teenager-free.

Make it personal

Let your children put their own stamp on the decorating scheme and they'll be more likely to take care of it.

Get storage sorted

Keep bedrooms tidy by making sure there's a place for everything.

Get serious about safety

From baby-proofing your nursery to ground rules for teens, basic safety measures can keep kids safe from harm.

Use the space wisely

Create zones for sleeping, work and play with functional furniture and fun accessories.

Planning

Planning a decorating project will save you time, money and effort and produce professional looking results.

Paint, wallpaper and fabric calculators

Work out exactly how much you'll need to complete the job and save money on waste and leftovers

Colour ideas

Be inspired by three different looks aimed at all ages

Nursery

Soft-grey walls are the perfect neutral shade for a new baby's room. Warmth can be added with vibrant limes, pinks and blues in stripes and checks, while pale furniture creates a restful feel and keeps the look clutter free.

Boys

Blues and green's combine to make a striking feature wall and are a good foil for warm, wood furniture and natural flooring. Cheerful motifs on the window treatment add to the sense of fun and create a welcoming look.

Girls

Pink is the obvious choice for a girl, but to prevent it becoming too sugary use a mix of patterns in vibrant shades of raspberry, red and orange. Temper them with white walls and furniture to keep the look fresh and contemporary.

Safety guidelines

Keep kids safe and sound with our essential guide to child-proofing your home

Think about bed location. Don't position the bed underneath a window, directly against a radiator or with shelves, ledges or appliances above that a child can get hold of.

Avoid hanging heavy pictures or mirrors above the bed.

Secure free-standing furniture by fixing it to the wall with anti-toppling devices such as straps or fixing brackets.

Avoid open drawers that can be used as a climbing frame - use child-proof latches on lower drawers.

Avoid bunkbeds if your child is under six. Cabin beds are a better option if you can squeeze them in - there'll be plenty of extra storage underneath too.

Use socket covers to keep plug sockets safe from probing fingers.

Secure all dangling lamp cords to prevent injury from pulling on them.

Childproof the windows. Use latches that will let the window open no more than 10cm.

Portable Baby Crib 4 Shelf Folding Bookcase

Types of Monitors and Specific Features

CRT

5 Tier Corner Shelf

CRT or Cathode Ray Tube monitors are the monitors everyone will have seen before. They that look like televisions. They range in size from 15 to around 22 Inch, and weight up to 30 kilos.

5 Tier Corner Shelf

Advantages

Great value for money

Mature technology

Good for graphical detail

Can accommodate many different resolutions

Disadvantages

Big

Take up a lot of space

Cost more to run than an LCD

LCD/TFT

LCD or Liquid Crystal Display screens have now been around a few years, these are the thin screens. Some look almost like a picture frame. You will see them referred to as LCD or TFT (TFT being a type of LCD). They start at around 14 inches, and due to technological advances bigger LCDs are being produced all the time, 30 Inch are already available with 40 inch on the way too. They weigh very little compared to their CRT equivalent and can be mounted on a wall or shelf with ease.

Advantages

Less desk space needed

Require less power to run, more environmentally friendly

Increased Viewable area, a 15"LCD can give the same viewable area as a 17" CRT monitor

Disadvantages

Viewing angle can affect image quality

One native resolution

More expensive than a CRT

General Monitor Features

Size

Here is one area where size does matter, the bigger the monitor the easier it will be on the eye. You will be able to open more windows and the text should be easier to read. Keep in mind the viewable area, all CRT have a smaller viewable area than their size. For Example a typical 17" CRT will have a viewable area of around 15.8". LCD tends to have the same viewable area, so a 15" LCD will have a 15" viewable area. Monitor size (and TVs) are measured diagonally, from the top left corner to the bottom right hand corner.

Resolution

Resolution is the number of pixels displayed on screen at one time, it's usually in the format Horizontal x Vertical, e.g.?- 800x600 or 1024x768. CRT monitors can display multiple resolutions easily, while LCD monitors are optimised for 1 native resolution (They can display other resolutions, but are optimised for 1) the higher the resolution the more you can get on screen and the sharper the image.

CRT Specific Features

Dot Pitch

Dot pitch is the distance in millimetres between two dots of the same colour on the screen, it's usually measured diagonally and you should be looking for something around 0.26mm

Refresh Rate

This is the number of time the screen is redrawn per second, most new monitors should have reasonable refresh rates, 75Hz or higher. Some older CRTs had lower refresh rates that can cause screen flicker and induce eye strain.

LCD Specific Features

Brightness

Because LCDs require their own back light to create colour, brightness is an important factor. It's measured in candelas per metre squared or cd/m2, where one candle produces a brightness of 1 candela. The higher this number, the brighter the screen.

Contrast Ratio

This is the degree of difference between the extremes of light and dark colours. The higher the contrast ratio, the more detailed the image will be. Blacks will be blacker, whites will be whiter, and particularly text on the image will be more vivid. It will usually be written as 500:1 or 250:1

Response Time

Refers to just how quickly a pixel can change colour. It's measured in milliseconds with 20-30ms being the normal at the moment. Gamers and people who watch a lot of movies on LCD screens would be better opting for something with a fast response time, around 16ms as this reduces the ghosting effect of fast motion.

When looking to buy a new monitor all of the above needs to be considered. Keep in mind you will be looking at your purchase day in day out for the next few years, so do not cut corners here, buy the best you can afford, your eyes will thank you for it later.

Dead Pixel Policy

Due to the difficulties associated with producing LCD screens very few brands guarantee a pixel perfect (Class 1) product,
and those that do charge a premium for it.
Most of the screens we sell currently adhere to the international standard, ISO 13406-2 and use class 2 panels.
It is possible, although uncommon, for a Class 2 LCD screen to have a small number of faulty pixels.
In these cases, this standard deems the screen as being 'not faulty'.

For an LCD monitor to be considered faulty there has to be a certain number of dead pixels:

Acceptable malfunctioning pixels by class & type per Million pixels:

2 complete pixels constantly illuminated (a white spot)

2 complete pixels not illuminated (a black spot)

5 sub pixels constantly on or off or intermittent fault. May blink or show a pixel as a base colour (Red, Blue, Green, Cyan, Magenta or yellow)
or, any 2 sub pixel faults within a 5 x 5 block of pixels

Also, the faults are cumulative, so if you have 1 white spot and 1 black spot per million pixels then this counts.

Native Resolution Pixel Count Example

1024 x 768 786,432 2 or more dead pixels considered faulty

1280 x 1024 1,310,720 3 or more dead pixels considered faulty

1600 x 1200 1,920,000 3 or more dead pixels considered faulty

So, You can have a 19" LCD monitor with a low native resolution where 2 pixels would be considered faulty, but if it had a native resolution of 1600 x 1200 and therefore had many more pixels, then 2 would not be classed as faulty.

For any LCD to be classed as faulty it must meet the above requirements, primarily those of the specific manufacturer. Please contact the manufacturer directly for their current dead pixel policy.

New Molybdenum Mine Hopes to Open in 2009 in the Yukon

The high price of molybdenum may finally take the Ruby Creek molybdenum deposit the final steps on its way to becoming a mine. By then, it will have been about 40 years since it was first discovered, and another 30 years since it was nearly ready to become a mine.

5 Tier Corner Shelf

But, it may be more than the high price of molybdenum which could officially make Ruby Creek one of Canada's newest molybdenum mines. Perseverance by Larry Reaugh, executive chairman of the Adanac Molybdenum Corporation, who with a bit of luck and 44 years in the mining experience - not to mention of few mines he's brought home, all add up to what it takes, these days, in pushing a project through to completion.

5 Tier Corner Shelf

We talked to Larry Reaugh over three telephone interviews to find out how he got this far and what steps he needs to take to bring the Yukon's Ruby Creek to her final destination: a moly mine producing some 14 million pounds of molybdenum every year.

Project Summary

The Ruby Creek Molybdenum Deposit is a low-grade bulk type of molybdenum deposit located, at the headwaters of Ruby Creek in the floor of an alpine cirque. It is located about 22 kilometers northeast of Atlin, British Columbia; 124 kilometers southeast of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory in the extreme north western corner of British, Columbia, Canada.

StockInterview: What's the background on the Ruby Creek property?

Larry Reaugh: Kerr Addison, a subsidiary of the Noranda Corporation, took the property on so they could earn a 60-percent interest for bringing it into production. They had to contend with the 3.5-percent NSR, but they were also trying to do this when molybdenum was selling at .80/pound. Eventually, they dropped the property. Placer had a base metals business as well as gold mining. They took this to a stage two feasibility whereby they were in the permit stage. Molybdenum slipped back to /pound. Placer put it on the shelf and eventually went out of the base metals business. We restaked the property and expanded the ground.

StockInterview: Is it realistic that you can raise C0 million and bring the Ruby Creek molybdenum project into production?

Larry Reaugh: The bankable feasibility is saying it should go into production. The payback would be three years, based upon a sliding scale of molybdenum from US dropping to over the first five years. We feel that's conservative. We have a much stronger outlook on molybdenum, and this outlook has been really reinforced in recent years. A 20-percent increase in reserves and grades would reflect in the payoff period, bringing it down to twenty months.

StockInterview: Let's set the record straight now. How big is the Ruby Creek deposit, how much is it worth and does your deposit pass muster with the U.S. Securities and Exchange (SEC) definition of reserves?

Larry Reaugh: The bankable feasibility gives us reserves. It is a reserve. It's passed muster. I can actually tell you it's worth US.2 billion and, with a possible 20-percent increase in grade, it could be worth over US$5 billion. With this increase in grade, costs could drop to US.70/pound. There are 167 million pounds, of which at least 100 million more are under measured and indicated.

StockInterview: Tell us about your recent drilling and why you are excited about this.

Larry Reaugh: Recent drilling is telling us there actually another deposit west. First off, we needed the sample to get a molybdenum concentrate to go to other companies that are off-taking our material. They have to know the specs, and we had to produce a concentrate. We had to drill for it, send down a ton of core and run it through the laboratory, G&T Metallurgical Services (Kamloops, British Columbia). We got a 92.5 percent recovery doing that, which is 3.5 percent greater than the bankable feasibility at 89 percent. This is a huge plus for us - greater recovery and a coarser grind.

StockInterview: What else did you discover during the angle drilling?

Larry Reaugh: Going at an angle into the ground, drilling is not only cutting the flat line veins, it's cutting the vertical. What we found now was that we got stock works - something like a spider web. It gives you greater continuity in the project. The greater the continuity, the greater the confidence in your ore body. Out of the 283 holes drilled in this project, 270 of them have been vertical. We weren't getting a good picture of what the vertical veins looked like. From these 13 angle holes that we drilled, the results were a staggering 75 percent higher at 0.139 percent. Previously, we got 0.079 percent from the high grade pit area. We are looking somewhere between ten and twenty percent increase in the total reserve volume. It would mean the cost per pound of moly (being mined) dropping from $5.87 to .60/pound.

StockInterview: But critics point to your lack of infrastructure, specifically the lack of power lines. Will you be using diesel?

Larry Reaugh: It is expensive and probably adds somewhere close to .50 to /pound to our cost. That hurts, but in order to make this project happen. There's actually power within 90 kilometers of this property, We discussed bringing it down, but power companies in Canada and especially in the Yukon have been bit before. They bring in power lines, and then the project doesn't go ahead. The territory is stuck with the cost. So, they want to see concrete in the ground. They want to see you turning the mill over. And then, they would seriously consider bringing the power down. We will be running with diesel for three or four years. Hopefully, we will be able to get the power lines permitted and have the provinces in the territory bring it down to the site. There is actually a hydroelectric dam, within a few kilometers from our site, the native group is putting in. That would allow them to expand from two megawatts to ten. They could tie it into a grid and sell it to us.

StockInterview: What is the status of your permit?

Larry Reaugh: We are about 60 percent of the way through our permits. We are still shooting for the end of this quarter to have them. We want to be in construction in June of this year. We put together the operating team. There will be more announcements on who we've hired: well-known mining specialists in the industry, operators, builders and so on. We are preparing this company to hit the ground running this summer. During the peak of construction, we'll have up to 1000 people working for us. We will have to pull from all over the province.

StockInterview: You have this much confidence in this project?

Larry Reaugh: This is a project that's never been glamorous. It's a work horse that you can use to build a company, or it can be the start of a company builder. I think the cash flow will always be predictable. You would be able to predict recoveries, to predict your grade. It's not erratic to put it simply. It will employ about 225 people full time. It's a project that's needed in an area in which the population is dwindling.

StockInterview: Run us step by step through the construction process. What are you first constructing?

Larry Reaugh: The concentrator itself - that's the major thing - get the foundations for the concentrator. We'd start pre-stripping although that wouldn't be something that has to be done immediately. Clearing the site, building out the site, drilling and blasting the foundations and then setting up the cladding of the building so that we can work on this year around. Of course, setting up camp, moving into the camp, setting up the sewer and water systems and all those little things that you never think about that costs a lot of money and have to be done.

StockInterview: When do you actually getting around to building out the mining operation?

Larry Reaugh:
Well, we construct all winter. Then we would begin the build-out on the tailings pond, and we would start pre-stripping. We've got about 10 million tons to pre-strip. By the way, on our five-year plan, once that's done, there would be no strip ratio. There would just be ore to haul so our costs would be down considerably on that. The pre-strip would cost to million. All of this comes with a 20,000-ton concentrator.

StockInterview: When will Ruby Creek commence production?

Larry Reaugh: We will be in production with the commissioning, which is sort of production. It will be low grade material at that time in order to get your recoveries up, your grind rate and everything like that. There are always a few things that have to be worked out that you don't want to do with the better grade material. We'd be in full production in the beginning of the first quarter 2009, probably commissioning through the last quarter of 2008.

StockInterview: Won't you need more than one company involved in writing Adanac a check for C0 million?

Larry Reaugh: We are talking to refineries and steel companies. I am sure there is going to be sort of mix of some steel companies that will be involved in the strategic partnership on this. It will be two or more because their needs are individual. They don't need a full-fledged operation. Some also have long-term contracts.

Second Opinions

We solicited comments from two industry experts about the Adanac Molybdenum Corporation: Otto Spork and David Michaud. One of Canada's top investment funds in 2006, Otto Spork's Strategic Opportunities Hedge Fund was an earlier investor in Adanac. David Michaud is our consulting metallurgical engineer. He neither holds an equity position in Adanac nor was he paid to render his technical opinion on the metallurgy of this deposit.

According to metallurgist, David Michaud, "Adanac Molybdenum Corp has a rare case of Text Book Molybdenum Metallurgy 101. It has a super coarse Endako Mines-like primary grind, flash rougher flotation and relatively strong regrind requirements. This makes for a nice clean Moly concentrate. An asset like this, once licensed in Canada, could attract attention from several mid-tier mining companies looking for metal reserves in politically safe countries."

In a brief telephone interview with Sextant Capital Management's Otto Spork, he said, "We are still very bullish on moly because demand is far exceeding supply and industry is finding more uses for the metal. We believe the price is going to slowly creep up. We like and are very bullish about Adanac. Larry Reaugh is very astute and has put properties into production. He's been in mining for nearly 40 years. We consider Adanac very undervalued. It has recently gone off the radar screen because of Blue Pearl Mining. Adanac's properties can be very profitable and are well on their way to getting permits to go into production."

Build a Mini Greenhouse For Your Backyard

It's very simple to build a mini greenhouse in your backyard. In fact, it's probably one of the easiest DIY projects you can attempt. There are a few different types of small greenhouses that you can choose from, all with their own advantages and disadvantages. This article helps you choose the right one for your needs, and helps you get started as soon as possible.

5 Tier Corner Shelf

Styles Of Mini Greenhouses

5 Tier Corner Shelf

As previously mentioned, there are a few options to choose from regarding greenhouses. Since this article rules out large models, this list is narrowed down to the following designs:

- The modular hot bed greenhouse, which is essentially a low laying heating box. It comes up about 2 feet, and is made from small lengths of lumber and polyethylene plastic to conduct the solar energy from the sun. This is a great design if you're after something easy to build, discreet, and portable.

- Next comes the free standing grow rack greenhouse. This one is shaped something like a refrigerator, and can be placed in an sunny corner of your property. Inside are 5 or 6 shelves that you can place seedlings or larger plants on. Again, this one uses similar materials to the hot bed.

- For something a bit larger, you could build a lean-to greenhouse. This is not self-standing, and uses an existing structure to stay up, like a fence, or your house. This is again quite simple to build, but can be a little unattractive, especially if it's nailed to your home!

Choosing The Best Materials

As with everything DIY, you've got quite a choice in terms of construction materials. Generally it's best to go with treated pine and polyethylene plastic. They're cheap and relatively attractive. However, if you've got a bit of extra cash to splash, and want to go for a chemical-free greenhouse, you can always substitute pine for cedar. This species of wood is naturally resistant to water and rot. Plastic alternatives are glass and green cloth.

Choosing the Right Replacement Canopy For Your Gazebo

There is a gazebo sitting out in the yard, with no canopy on it because the original one that came with the gazebo is ripped and torn after years of wear and tear, and the frame is still in excellent condition. What do you do? You can either throw the gazebo away and fork out 0 to 0, maybe even ,000 or more for a new gazebo OR buy a replacement canopy top to fit your existing frame. Sure, buying a new gazebo may sound like a good idea, but throwing away the old metal frame of the old gazebo, which is probably not that old to begin with, is not environmentally friendly. Plus, that is a lot of money to pay every couple of years for a new frame. So, the only practical, environmentally friendly, and cost effective solution is to buy a replacement canopy. Not only will you have a new top for your gazebo frame, but added years of enjoyment and fun for you and your family.

5 Tier Corner Shelf

There are a lot of replacement canopies to choose from, and it all depends on the type of frame you have. Today's gazebos come in all shapes and sizes, and the trend seems to be that gazebos are getting bigger. It is very rare nowadays to find an 8 x 8 square gazebo. Today, gazebos come in all shapes and sizes, straying away from the traditional square shape, and offering rectangular, hexagon, and round shapes. With various gazebo shapes retail stores provide, the style is just as important. Detailed scrollwork on the canopy such as leaves, flowers, and lattice work give the gazebos a unique look, as if the gazebo itself is another room where you can relax or entertain guests. The ability to customize and add furniture and other decor creates an extension of the family living room, only it is outdoors.

5 Tier Corner Shelf

Which canopy is right for me?

As every gazebo is different, so too, are the replacement canopies for it. All of our replacement canopies that we manufacture are made specific to that gazebo. The first step in determining which replacement canopy you need is with a model number (also known as style number, SKU number, etc.). This model number can either be the manufacturer's model number or the model number the retail store assigned to the product. This is the gazebo's identification number. The model number can be found on a tag on the underside of the original canopy or on the netting set. The instructions manual also include the model number. Most think the model number is etched on the frame of the gazebo. That is not the case, and should be a suggestion to manufacturers, as that would be the easiest place to find the model number.

If you do not know or have the model number, the store from where the gazebo was purchased narrows down the many different types of gazebos you will funnel through to determine which replacement canopy will fit your frame. We carry replacement canopy tops for gazebos that were sold at big box retail stores, such as Home Depot, Target, and Wal-Mart, to name a few.

What makes my gazebo different than the rest?

The store where the gazebo was purchased and the model number are the best chances of finding a replacement canopy. However, if those are not available, the unique characteristics of the frame itself are another tool in finding that specific canopy top. Ask yourself, "What makes my gazebo different?" Finials, or ornaments such as bulbs, arrows, and spears that are used to fasten the canopy onto the gazebo frame.

Gazebos are usually single tier or double-tiered. A single tier frame canopy looks like a pyramid. A double tiered frame has another top tier structure to accommodate another, smaller canopy top. Also, the way the canopy attaches to the frame is another difference to consider. Some canopies attach over the frame of the gazebo for a secure fit. Other canopies attach by a corner pocket design, where the canopy attaches to poles which extend past the frame of the gazebo. Some attach by hooks into holes on the frame. In addition, every gazebo is constructed differently. Some gazebos have panels that contain detailed scrollwork or shelves where you can display plants, vases, and other outdoor items. Strong, sturdy posts, or a fenced in look are also unique characteristics that vary with each gazebo.

Choosing the right replacement canopy

The best way to determine which canopy top you need for your frame is with a model number. The varying details of the gazebo frame can also help, but will not guarantee a fit. Although there is a universal that is available, choosing a custom fit will make your gazebo appear brand new again. The universal replacement canopy provides a generic fit and not a custom fit for most standard 10 x 10 square size gazebos. With a custom fit canopy, there is less likelihood of the canopy fabric deteriorating, as a replacement canopy that does not fit can shorten the lifespan of the canopy. In addition, the accumulation of water after a light or a heavy rainstorm creates a pool of water on the canopy, which results in mold forming, and tearing of the fabric.

If you want to make your gazebo look new again, a replacement canopy will definitely add more years of enjoyment for you and your family. Our replacement canopies are made out of a nylon material and weighs 200 grams per square meter, which is above the industry standard of 140 grams per square meter. The material may be 30% more durable than the canopy that came with your original gazebo. Our replacement canopy tops are lacquered to be water resistant, and is also UV treated.

Fly Fishing For Big Trout in Michigan

After the last of the ice has thawed and before the beginning of major inset activity, a narrow window of opportunity exists for the fly angler to tempt huge brown trout with large streamers. Here in our part of the country, the Midwest, this is normally during late May and early June.

5 Tier Corner Shelf

As water temperatures begin increasing, so does the activity of the fish. When they emerge from their winter lethargy of low metabolism, they're hungry and ready to eat. Smaller baitfish swimming near the river bank and shallows resume active feeding as well. They too are foraging, looking for anything and everything that might offer nourishment. The occasional subsurface eruption is a tell-tale signal that one has just met a swift, piscivorous end.

5 Tier Corner Shelf

One thing you can almost always count on during this time of year is a fast moving weather front. Thunderstorms can come on quickly and wreak havoc if you're not prepared. For this reason, I take advantage of the internet and the Weather Channel to help me choose fishing days least likely to be affected by weather. Despite all the forecasting in the world, sometimes I can still find myself in a precarious situation.

One day is seared into my memory and not likely to dissipate any time soon. I was out with friend and fellow streamer freak Brad Turner during springtime a number of years back. We weren't on the water for half an hour before a fast moving weather front came in. A number of lightning bolts touching ground too close for our comfort drove us under cover. With our graphite rods judiciously placed against a tree yards away, we were set to wait it out. Rolling thunder turned into a loud CRACK that sounded like big-game rifle being fired right next to us. Having been caught in more than a few storms over the last 30 years, I've seen them come and go, but it's impossible to be ready for that blinding streak of silver from above. This one nearly required a change of britches ! It did pass, but not before giving us an incredible light show and display of the power that mother nature has hidden in those clouds above.

Big Trout Condos

Big trout like to live where they feel safe. They also like to eat feed not too far from familiar surroundings.

Brush piles, downed trees, uprooted stumps, logjams, old docks, manmade stream improvements and deeply undercut, heavily rooted banks all qualify as home-sweet-home to an old, hook-jawed brown trout.

Occupying some of the heaviest cover the river has to offer, he doesn't make himself easy to get at. When in search of food, he will venture from the comfort of structure to spots in the river where a feeding channel is close, but never more than a tail-kick away from the lumber and his safely zone. His home habitat is as familiar to him as your favorite living room recliner is to you. He knows exactly where he is and how to quickly get back to safety should the need arise.

Although such large trout may move to and from their preferred lies for feeding purposes, once a dominant fish finds a comfortable location to call home, he is not likely to give it up to a subordinate fish. Work log jams with the most favorable looking surroundings. Continued depth downstream from a piling or a nice cut in the river bottom at the edge of the jam where current speeds come together below the structure and create a nice seam for fish to comfortably sit in. Oven overhanging branches from a neighboring tree that casts a shadow on the hole or run. Be deliberate and thorough in working these deep, dark, promising places.

One such location proved fruitful on a late May day couple years ago. With an arsenal of rods, fly boxes, a cooler of Mountain Dew and submarine sandwiches, Tommy and I set out for another day of streamer fishing. No long into the day we came upon a likely looking run. I was on the oars. With a couple of casts toward the front of an ominous jam, followed by one down the gut, Tommy's line went taut before he could yell, "FISH ON !" The battle between man and beast was beautiful, each having its way with the other at different times during the tussle. I dropped anchor and hopped out of the boat, intent on getting downstream from the fish. With symphonic precision, Tommy worked the fish over a sand-bar shelf. I move in with the net and ---in the bag ! After we caught our breath, out came the camera and tape; 24 inches of hooked-jawed majesty. One look at his elongated snout and his mouthful of teeth and we named him "The Gator".

Another episode three years ago will not soon be forgotten. Only after casting farther and working line deeper in a run called "Kestners Corner" on the famous Pere Marquette rivers in western Michigan, did I find the sweet spot of this particular run. Sweet for the fish, but not for me and this one will remain a mystery. With friend Adam on the oars, I diligently worked tandem flies in and around various obstacles in this short S-bend of logs, stumps and boulders. Adam pumped the oars a couple times to set me up for the prime spot in the run. I measured the cast and sent my flies toward the jam. I had barely gotten my line under a finger to start stripping it back and out he came....BANG A short but swift hook-set and the battle was on. The heavy-shouldered golden brute made a dash for the wood, but with a downstream sweep of my rod, I kept him from reaching the lumber. He made another run for cover, but another rod turn and he was clear of danger. Luck was on my side.....I thought. His last run was downstream into fast, choppy water. I felt him tire, Adam was there with net in hand and ready. With a couple more turns of the reel, I was ready to bring him up. As he came to the surface, he revealed himself, "BIG fish". Another burst of energy put him just out of the nets reach. My attempt to bring him back toward us ended with him splashing frantically at the surface nearly next to the boat and next thing I see.......pop, there goes the hook and one incredible fish.

Gearing up for the Big Boys

He's not your average trout. Leave your 4 and 5 weight fly rods at home. Casting full sinking or heavy sink-tip lines with oversized streamers requires greater physical strength and persistence. A 7 or 8 weight, medium to fast action rods, measuring 8 ½ to 10 feet will deliver your offering the best. Properly balanced, such rods are light enough to allow for sustained casting throughout the day, yet have the backbone to pull a big fish out of, or away from, heavy cover and structure during a dog fight such as this.

I recall a battle with a plump, feisty female brown trout with more speed than is often associated with large, lumber-hunkering browns. With the umpteenth cast of my 10 foot, 7 weight rod rigged with 250 grain sinking line in long deep runs, my fingers started to get number. Despite the fatigue, my cast landed between a boil from a submerged stump and a series of crisscrossed logs in a center river trough. Between strips of my streamer, the line jumped and I was off to the races with this butterscotch beauty.

After a run of 30-40 feet downstream, most of which was less than two feet below the surface, she reversed direction with just as much vigor and was back in front of us in no time. When she made her turn close to the boat, I could see the profile and knew this was no small trout. After negotiating a few more runs around the surrounding logs, she was safely resting in the soft mesh of the net. With a short, narrow nose and an opal blue dot behind her eye, she lit up in the midday sun, all 2 foot of her.

This pace of action can down right tire you out. It's a good idea to take an occasional break to subdue the inevitable fatigue that will set in during a full day of "big boy" streamer fishing. If you're too tired and not paying attention, you could end up casting a rather pricey rod/reel combo right into the river. However, with some patience and practice with your timing, such fishing can be very rewarding.

Different fishing situations call for the use of sinking or sink tip lines of differing lengths and weight. If wade fishing, I might opt for a sink-tip of 8-14 feet in length, in a 250-300 grain weight. Being able to mend the back portion of the fly line will allow you to work the bottom two-thirds of the water column.

Leaders are important, but not nearly as critical as they are for dry fly fishing. My typical streamer leader is about 3-5 feet, depending on water clarity and tapered down to 8-15 pound test. In other words, I let the river guide me......sounds odd! If the water is off color, I will increase pound strength of tippet and decrease it if water is low and/or clear. When tying fly to tippet with a standard improved clinch or Duncan Loop knot, it's helpful to balance the line strength and diameter with "How" the fly acts in the water. Specifically, how does it look in the water based on the stiffness of both high/low pound test tippet material? I will use a Rapala knot or Perfection loop knot when tying on larger streamers. With an open loop type knot, it allows the fly/flies to "bob and weave" through the water in an erratic manner which often elicits vicious strikes.

Two years ago Marc Kiekenapp and I found ourselves drifting unknowingly close to one too many log jams and he got snagged up. I rowed over to it, he stripped extra line in to bring the snagged fly right to the rod tip to try and free it from the lumber....SNAP !....Marc's four piece rod was not a five piece. More than one rod has fallen victim to big streamer fishing. Overhanging branches, strong hooks sets and strong tippet can be a recipe for rod breakage from time to time, bring an extra rod along just to be safe.

Supersize Flies

Let your conventional size 6 Black Nose Dace, Mickey Finns or Muddler Minnows rest comfortably in their own box next to your summertime dry fly box of Elk Hair Caddis and PMD's. To lure a really large trout, you have to start thinking BIG. Streamers that look like small rodents with hooks. The flies you should be packing are four to six inches long, sometimes even longer depending on conditions. Often constructed with two hooks and connected with heavy backing, heavy monofilament, wire or a combination, they are truly a "creation" by the fly tier. Some are weighted to go deep, others aren't in order to ride high in the water column. Some look more like Christmas tree ornaments than traditional trout streamers. Not to say that the "classics" don't work, but you will increase your chances for a big boy considerably by increasing the size of the fly you're fishing. A big trout wants a mouthful if it's going to spend the energy chasing food. It's a thrill to see a large fly, undulating through the water as it's retrieved and then suddenly engulfed by a dark shadow that bolts out of nowhere and buckles your rod to the cork......my heart start pounding just thinking about it !

Vary color and combinations to correspond to differences in water depth, clarity, flow, light conditions and even physical makeup of the river. When throwing tandem streamers, I like to have one offset the other in color and/or action. Tip drab olive fly could be followed by a sparkly rainbow pattern, black followed by white, cream deer hair head (will suspend a bit due to deer hair), trailed by a bright yellow. The combinations are many and it doesn't hurt to try out different combinations on different rivers.

I have found some consistency in productive patterns when fishing high water with some "tint" to it. Under such conditions, a fly with a good silhouette will draw more attentions from fish than a sparse, faint pattern. When working a stretch of river filled with log jams that have a dark back drop, I will use lighter combinations since they will show up good with that dark wood behind it. If the run is a deeper "cut" or trough adjacent to quality lumber based cover, but has a sand bottom, I will be quick to go dark due to the comparatively light back drop of the sand bottom.

Two years ago I was fishing a black strip leech, trailed by a white baitfish pattern. An enormous brown trout bolted from cover to inspect the leech, only to pinwheel back and absolutely HAMMER the white fly. I often wonder if an attention-getting front fly acts as an attractor more often than we "know". Since only the fish have that answer, it's still just a theory. There are no hard and fast rules here, experimentation has often led to some great discoveries in the world of fly fishing.

Technique

Casting supersized flies cannot merely tire you out; it can be downright dangerous if not carried out with your full attention and some practice prior to getting in the river. Case in point - following a heart-pounding episode where a true trophy TRUTTA showed himself with a quick chase and short inspection of my fly, I frantically attempted to re-cast to the same spot, only to have it all come to a halt with a five inch streamer pattern hanging from my EAR !.....OUCH ! Sunglasses or other eye protection are critical to have on when casting big flies.

Given that most any river can be fished with large, gaudy streamers, it's now a matter of how to effectively cast such large flies, get them where you want AND not put a hook in your fishing buddy.

My vision of traditional streamer fishing involves casting toward a bank at a 90 degree angle - perpendicular in other words - and working the fly back into mid river as though it got caught sideways in the current and is now susceptible to any nearby ambush artists....big trout ! Logic here is that by casting toward the bank, "maybe" just a bit downstream from perpendicular, that you're putting your fly in front of the greatest number of fish. This is due to the fact that trout need to keep their noses into the current to most effectively pump water and oxygen through their gills. After retrieving fly/flies to just shy of the sink line-leader knot, pick up, false cast once, maybe twice to lengthen slightly or change direction a bit, present fly, let is sink slightly and begin the stripping sequence and repeat as you work your way down river. Repeat the process, focusing on likely holding water such as medium depth and medium current speed runs, troughs and jams.

Sounds good, but what's wrong with this approach ??? Nothing, IF you have the room to back cast 15-25 or more feet of line. When using larger flies that cast and track differently in the water, a few things can be done with the cast and retrieve to keep your flies where you want them and not beat your body up too badly while chucking around big macs all day.

I like to employ a roll cast set up when working with heavy sink lines and big flies. Like a traditional roll cast, the motion is similar, but for different reasons. Rather than stripping the fly all the way back to nearly the tip of the rod, instead begin the roll cast motion once you see your fly or have a pretty good idea that it's only 6-8 feet out from the rod tip. By starting the roll cast at this time, you're accomplishing 2 things in one continuous motion; not bringing ALL of your line in and then having to cast a clunky knot through various snake guides on your rod, but still keeping flies in the water for the greatest distance you can. Should a strike come at the end, when your flies are a mere few feet from your casting position, you can strip one big arm length of line in and still have enough tension to set the hook. Polarized glasses help a lot when training your eyes to look for the flies, versus aimlessly stripping away until you hear the line-leader knot clumsily climb through the tip-top of your rod.

By keeping some line outside your rod tip and using the first part of the roll cast motion as a "set up"- soft roll cast that has your flies land very close, but in FRONT of you - it's rather easy to then simply pick up line, execute a short back cast and shoot the remainder of your fly line. An exceptional technique on smaller streams, it's also a great way to fish larger rivers. Once you get into a rhythm, it's a very effective method for covering a lot of water and minimizing the wear on your body, especially the casting arm and shoulder.

Once in the "big fly" mindset, it's critical to strip whatever streamer pattern(s) you're casting, at a speed consistent with that of the natural that you're trying to duplicate with your fly. In other words, don't strip a 2" baitfish pattern in rapid, 20-30" increments, a fish that small cannot swim that fast ! This being said, I'm not a strong proponent of the slow strip during prime streamer time, which are the warming months of April and May in the Midwest. In some cases, you have to get a fish on the verge of hysteria to follow a big streamer. Sometimes that means running it by them at a pace that's slow enough for them to catch, yet fast enough to make them nearly swim out of their scales trying to get it. As we "match the hatch" with surface feeding trout, we can do nearly the same with streamers at times. Identify what big trout are likely to be feeding on based on the river and habitat and then duplicate the fly, motion and speed of retrieval to best match the natural. Large trout eat fish and they're used to chasing them down.......give 'em what they want and what they're familiar with.

The Secret to Coaxing a Big Fish

As with so much else in life, success in hooking and landing big trout is fundamentally a matte of putting in your time. Few anglers I know can pick up a big-fly rig and cast it effortlessly and accurately if they have not devoted hours of time and sustained effort to this type of fly fishing. Even those who have fished this way have to get re-accustomed to the whole feel of this game. "A bit rusty, eh?" is a common phrase early spring from friends and fellow anglers I may be on the water with. We all throw some wayward casts early in the season. But once "dialed in", although not always poetry in motion, it is rather magical to watch and only then can one turn the tables on large trout, when WE become the predator.

Streamer fishing for big trout is definitely not for everyone. You first have to accept the givens of this approach.

1 - You're not going to catch a lot of fish and may get only a few good shots at them.

2 - Hooked doesn't mean landed. I lost one of the nicest brown trout that I've ever seen, let alone hooked on a streamer, right at the net after negotiating numerous obstacles like stumps, boulders, an entire log jam and a tricky turn in the river. Friend Adam was ready with the net......and I lost him. As much as we "willed" that fish another 10 inches closer to the rim of the net, it didn't happen.

3 - You will get tired. Your arm may feel like Jell-O at the end of a full day of tossing around rag dolls.

4 - You will lose flies, some very elaborate that may have taken you or another person quite a while to tie.

5 - You can experience glory and agony with the same fish in a matter of seconds....some of which you will remember forever....
